The Defensive Driver Discount: You’ve Earned It

You have always been a conscientious driver, and have even received a certificate of completing from a defensive driver curse which you took voluntarily.  But did you know that in addition to your certificate the thanks of all the other safety-conscious drivers on the road, you may have earned the tangible appreciation of you automobile insurance company in the form of a defensive driver discount on your car insurance premium?

Automobile insurance providers have always given favorable rates, known as good driver discounts, to those drivers with neither accidents nor moving violations on their driving records.  Such discounts are a way of encouraging drivers to practice good driving habits, and the safer their insured drivers are, the fewer insurance claims will be filed against an insurance carrier.  A little of the money the insurance carriers save is then passed on to their safe drivers to so that they will keep up the good work.

But now insurance companies are offering even larger savings to those who qualify for a defensive driver discount as well as for a good driver discount. Deducting both a defensive driver discount from your insurance premium can save you an extra five to twenty percent.

Many of the major auto insurance companies now offer a defensive driver discount, and some of those discounts are considerable.  For its insured drivers past the age of fifty-five who have successfully completed an approved automobile accident prevention class, AllState Insurance offers a five percent premium reduction.  AllState is one of the largest and most respected auto insurance companies, and makes a point of encouraging and rewarding the safe driving habits of its clients.

You may have seen the ads from Geico Insurance, another large and well-regarded auto insurance company.  Geico offers an online defensive driving course, and those over the age of fifty who complete it and pass another course approved both by Geico and the United Safety Council will qualify for the Geico defensive driver discount.

A third auto insurer, Nationwide Auto Insurance, also recognizes and rewards its drivers who pass defensive driver courses with defensive driver discounts.  Most of the better-known auto insurance carriers, in fact, offer defensive driver discounts to those of a certain age, and the amount of the discounts will depend on the regulations of the state of a driver’s residence.  All of the insurance companies which provide defensive driver discounts do require drivers to pass a defensive driver or accident prevention class.
